DEKAD NO. 35   DECEMBER 11 - 20, 2018

PHILIPPINE AGRI-WEATHER FORECAST

The weather systems that will affect the whole country are the northeast monsoon, tail-end of a cold front and easterlies.

During the first half of the dekad, Northern Luzon will have cloudy skies with isolated light rains while Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Visayas and the provinces of Aurora and Quezon will have cloudiness with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country is expected to have good weather except for possible isolated rainshowers. After this, the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera will have cloudy skies with light rains. The provinces of Aurora and Quezon and the regions of Bicol, Zamboanga Peninsula, CARAGA and ARMM will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers while the remaining portions of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers. The rest of the archipelago will have good weather with chances of isolated rainshowers. During the latter days of the forecast period, Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms while the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers.

Winds coming from the northeast will blow over Luzon and Visayas while the rest of the country will have winds from the east to northeast. However, during the latter part of the forecast period, Northern Luzon will have winds from the northeast to east while northeasterly wind flow will prevail over Visayas and the rest of Luzon. Mindanao will have winds coming from the northeast to north.

During the first half of the dekad, the northern and central seaboards of Luzon will be rough to very rough while the rest of Luzon and the eastern section of the country will have moderate to rough seas. The rest of the country will have slight to moderate movement of coastal waters. During the second half of the forecast period, the seaboards over Luzon and the eastern section of Visayas and Mindanao will be moderate to rough while the rest of the country will have slight to moderate seas.

ENSO neutral condition is present in the tropical Pacific.

FARM ADVISORIES:
Weeds compete directly with the rice plants and reduce yield. Each 1 kg dry matter of weeds is equivalent to 1 kg grain loss. Weeds cause most yield loss within the first 20–50 days after crop establishment. Weeding after panicle initiation may also be important to prevent weeds shedding seeds in future crops.

Effective weed management:

Ø  Plowing and harrowing in fallow should be undertaken at least 10–14 days apart or after rain.  Good land leveling reduces weed growth because most weeds have trouble germinating under water.

Ø  Select varieties which have early vigor. Use clean rice seed which is free of weed seeds.

Ø  Apply permanent water early to the fields because weeds cannot germinate under water.

Ø  Another weed management practice is applying first weeding within 2–3 weeks after establishment and the second in another 2–3 weeks. The third weeding is before fertilizer application.

Ø  In using herbicides, identify the weed correctly and use the appropriate herbicide as recommended on the label.  Spray when the weeds are small.

Ø  Apply pre-emergence herbicides after planting prior to establishment.  Apply post-emergence herbicides after the emergence of rice, being careful of crop damage.

Ø  Herbicides are poisonous; if they are not used properly, they can cause health and environment problems. Label them clearly and keep them out of children’s reach.

Ø  Always use protective clothing when spraying.  Do not wear raincoats when spraying as this increases sweating.
